We are all horrified and saddened by the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, particularly with regards to the potential calamity facing the region’s birds, sea turtles and marine mammals. If you are interested in helping with the Gulf Coast disaster and efforts to protect birds, wildlife, ocean life and habitat, here is a list of resources to get you started: National Audubon Society (www.audubonaction.org); Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research (www.tristatebird.org); Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (www.mobilebaynep.com); Mobile Baykeeper (www.mobilebaykeeper.org); Alabama Coastal Foundation (www.joinacf.org); Coalition to Restore Costal Louisiana (www.crcl.org); Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida (www.pensacolawildlife.com); Oil Spill Volunteers (www.oilspillvolunteers.com); The City of Biloxi (www.biloxi.ms.us).
I want to help out and volunteer to help save the ocean wildlife, but I don’t know if I’m old enough or how to…how can I help???
You need to contact organizations working in the area to find out if you can participate.
Hello I’m from canada and I really would love to help clean up the wild life! I work in a salon and we have been collecting all of the hair we cut to soak up the oil! But my help can’t not stop here! If you could please give me a bit more information on how I can help that would be fabulous!! I am willing to travel!
You need to contact the organizations listed below if interested in getting involved. As this information was posted a month ago there are probably more resources elsewhere on the net.
I looked up oil spill clean up jobs and animal rescue jobs and am dismayed that all wildlife and animal relief efforts are about recieving donations and asking for volunteers while the general clean up efforts (being trades based pay $10-$20 an hour to get people out there and do the job. Of course cleaning up the mess is the first step to saving the animals but I’m outraged that BP and the government do not fund job opportunities in animal rescue.
This is predisaster mentality – in general there are more jobs available in trades and development then in wilderness preservation and expansion. Nontheless, in postdisaster conditions corporations that cause global disease should be required to fund jobs for wildlife rehabilitation efforts.
I just can’t even believe this has happened. It’s a big step. Everyone is trying to help the Oil Spill animals, and so am i! I hope we can all get together and help out the animals of the gulf and make a difference! We need to make a move to make a change, because i know we can do it!!! I will try my best, and i hope you will too. Thank You.
