Argentina set up tie with Germany‎

Monday, June 28th, 2010

carlos-tevez-argentinaIt was unfortunate that two of our favourite teams had to play each other last night but Argentina’s victory has set up an intriguing quarter-final rematch against Germany, who knocked them out of the tournament four years ago in Berlin. Two goals from Carlos Tevez and one from Gonzalo Higuain secured a 3-1 win over Mexico in Johannesburg. Argentina manager Diego Maradona is confident his team will beat Germany in Cape Town on Saturday to progress to the World Cup semi-finals.

Two of the best attacking sides in the tournament square off today as Brazil take on Chile. These were the top two teams in South American qualifying, and know each other very well. The thought of Brazil playing at full tilt from the first minute against an attacking Chilean team presents an exciting prospect.

World Cup: Latin America Swells With Pride

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

brazilfansLatin American football fans never need much excuse to get excited, but the region’s best start to a World Cup in years is fuelling the fiesta and giving them a shot of sporting pride.

Six out of seven Latin American teams at the World Cup have qualified for the knockout phase in South Africa, compared with just four at the last World Cup in Germany in 2006.

Slick football from teams like Chile and Uruguay as well as traditional giants Argentina and Brazil has seen the region’s teams thrive.

In Buenos Aires, the early exits of fancied European nations such as Italy and France have fuelled hopes that national icon Maradona can coach Argentina to victory.

It is the Brazilians, however, who are brimming with the most confidence. Two-thirds of them believed they would win the World Cup in South Africa, compared to 48 percent of Argentinians, 15 percent of Chileans and 12 percent of Mexicans, according to a survey commissioned by Brazil’s Ibope polling firm.

Brazil are Losing the Battle of the Bulge

Friday, June 25th, 2010

battleofbulgeBrazilians are battling the bulge. A government study says the South American country known for its bikinis is expanding at the waistline. The Health Ministry notes that in 2009, 46.6 percent of Brazil’s 190 million people were overweight. That’s up from 42.7 percent in 2006. The rate of obesity also rose, from 11.4 percent in 2006 to 13.9 percent in 2009. The study released Monday is based on interviews with 54,000 adults. The result: 51 percent of men and 42.3 percent of women are overweight. The study blamed poor eating habits, lack of exercise and genetics. Brazil is still slim, however, compared to the United States, where a recent study showed 68 percent of the population was overweight.

The Aviation Industry Moves a Step Closer to Biofuel

Friday, June 25th, 2010

algae-derived-biofuelThis year’s ILA Air Show in Berlin gave the public its first look at flight powered fully by algae-derived biofuel. The demonstration, courtesy of EADS Innovation Works, a division of European aerospace manufacturer EADS, featured a twin-engine Diamond DA42 NG light aircraft, which used algae biofuel in one engine and conventional jet kerosene in the other.

The result: the biofuel was consumed more slowly due to its higher energy content, which resulted in fuel savings of 5 to 10 percent.

According to Dr Jean Botti, Chief Technical Officer at EADS, “This opens up the feasibility of carbon-neutral flights and we will continue to focus our research in this exciting area. Third-generation biofuels are more than just a replacement for fossil petroleum – they push the possibilities of future propulsion.”

Comparisons of gas exhaust have shown that algae-derived biofuels contain one eighth of the hydrocarbons of crude oil-derived kerosene and considerably lower levels of nitrogen oxide and sulphur oxide. Furthermore, algae biofuels offer distinct advantages over other biofuel sources. For example microalgae create at least 30 times more biomass per cultivation than rapeseed and can be grown on poor quality land using non-potable water and salt water, which means its cultivation does not compete with food production.

EADS, its helicopter division Eurocopter and Argentina-based Biocombustibles del Chubut, which supplied the algae biofuel for the flights, signed a cooperative agreement to evaluate the creation of an aviation biofuel production facility in Brazil.

Follow The Road: Alongside the People of this World

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

followtheroadDestiny played a hand when Katja from Germany and Augustas from Lithuania met in Spain and then decided in France to share their lives together. In January 2006 they set off for Mexico with the conviction that their thumbs will guide them on their journey. Seeing life as an invitation to follow their dreams, they found themselves in most Central American countries within the first 16 months of their life-journey. With trust in human kindness, they were provided with all they needed during their trip – free transportation, shelter, and at times even food.

Katja Lachmann’s book provides a fascinating account of their experiences whilst hitch-hiking through Mexico, Central America, and Cuba. The intrepid travellers take you to past lives in Mexico, a self-created world in Belize, an illegal border crossing in Guatemala, a sailing adventure in the Caribbean Sea, a confrontation with Cuban authorities, and provide a unique view on a personal assault in Costa Rica. Follow them to meet the people of this world and gain a valuable insight to everyday life on the road.

Avocado – The Unusual Fruit with Hidden Qualities

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

avocadosModern avocados (Persea americana) are all members of the laurel family, and the tree is native to the Latin America. The avocado originated in southern Mexico but was cultivated from the Rio Grande to central Peru before the arrival of Europeans.

The Mexicans likened the shape of an avocado to a human testicle, which upset the local Spanish missionaries, who were subsequently forbidden to plant the trees. The high vitamin E content may encourage higher fertility in humans, but its nutritional qualities range further than its aphrodisiac reputation.

Although they resemble pears, any similarity in nutritional terms stops there. An interesting fact is the high fat and protein content, and therefore the high-energy content, which makes avocado pears a rich choice for any snack or meal, including salads. Only olives approach the same values, weight for weight.

For those on a vegetarian diet, avocados are a goldmine, with a high calorific value and a rich combination of nutrients. Some people believe the avocado’s unique biochemical content is deserving of the superfood status.

Avocado is also known to promote healthy skin and hair. A puree made from avocado flesh and applied to the skin is said to improve the texture of skin, as well it might, with such a high vitamin A and E content. Although many people use it as a facial mask, it is most beneficial when eaten.

Latin America Shining Brightly at World Cup

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

argentinafootballAfter 23 games it is the teams from Latin America that are lighting up the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay have sparkled, while others like Chile and Paraguay have done enough to suggest that a place in the next knockout phase could be theirs for the taking. And much-fancied Brazil have made their presence felt even if less emphatically than expected, winning 2-1 against minnows North Korea, despite dominating the match. Along with Argentina it is perhaps Mexico that have impressed the most in South Africa. Mexico’s next game is against Uruguay on 22 June and with Argentina likely to lie in wait for the Group A runners-up, Aguirre’s team will be looking to win to ensure they avoid Lionel Messi and co. Uruguay will win the group if the game is drawn.
